EU’s AI Pact Garners Over 100 Signatories Including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft; Apple and Meta Absent

EU’s AI Pact and Its Early Signatories

The European Commission has unveiled a list of over 100 companies that have signed onto the AI Pact. This voluntary initiative encourages firms to adopt ethical AI practices and governance.

The effort bridges compliance gaps ahead of the AI Act’s full enforcement, fostering early adoption of AI regulations. Key requirements of the AI Pact include adopting AI governance strategies, identifying high-risk AI systems, and enhancing AI literacy among staff.

Companies can also opt for pledges promoting transparency, such as notifying users when interacting with AI and labeling AI-generated content.

The AI Pact was introduced in May 2023 with early backing from Google. However, notable absentees include Apple and Meta. Meta has chosen to focus on aligning with the formal requirements of the AI Act instead of the voluntary commitments of the Pact, possibly to avoid hefty non-compliance fines.

The AI Pact aims to foster a collaborative environment for sharing best practices. Signatories range from tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and OpenAI, to SMEs and specialized firms. Despite broad industry participation, the absence of key players like Anthropic, Nvidia, and Spotify indicates diverse approaches to regulatory engagement within the AI sector.

Voluntary but impactful, the AI Pact encourages industry standards ahead of official regulations, pushing for ethical AI development and use. Companies must report progress after 12 months, facilitating continuous improvement and public accountability.

This initiative not only boosts regulatory readiness but also enhances the reputations of committed companies.
