The InnoTrans trade fair, held in Berlin in late September 2024, showcased the latest technological advancements in the rail industry, with a focus on AI and alternative power sources for trains.
Hydrogen Power Takes Center Stage
- Several hydrogen-powered trains were on display, including:
- Hyundai Rotem’s light rail vehicle for Daejeon, South Korea
- CRRC’s 125-mph “Cinova” train
- Siemens’ Mireo +H fuel-cell-powered train
- Stadler unveiled the RS Zero, a regional train that burns hydrogen in internal combustion engines
- Wabtec is testing hydrogen as a fuel for internal combustion engines, with long-term tests underway at Oakridge National Laboratory
Battery Technology and Alternative Fuels
Wabtec and Progress Rail showcased advancements in battery technology for locomotives:
- Wabtec is building 7 MWh battery road locomotives for Australian mining and 2.4 MWh switchers for New York City
- Progress Rail exhibited Caterpillar-made lithium-ion batteries for its “Joule” line of locomotives
Artificial Intelligence and Automation
AI and machine learning were prominent themes, with applications including:
- Wabtec’s “one bot” for accessing technical information
- Remote train operation and defect detection systems
- Autonomous switching locomotives for short line use
- AI-driven predictive maintenance systems from Progress Rail and Wabtec
Real-time Monitoring and Tracking
New systems for freight car tracking and condition monitoring were introduced:
- The French “Track Value” system, offering real-time information via onboard computers and sensors
- North America’s RailPulse platform, backed by major railroads and equipment providers
These innovations demonstrate the rail industry’s commitment to efficiency, sustainability, and technological advancement. For more details on the exhibition, see the full report on the InnoTrans 2024 opening.
