WIPO Report Reveals Explosive Growth in GenAI Patents and Research
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has released a comprehensive Patent Landscape Report on Generative AI (GenAI), highlighting significant trends in patents, scientific publications, and application areas. The report reveals a dramatic increase in GenAI patent families over the past decade.
Key Findings:
- GenAI patent families grew from 733 in 2014 to over 14,000 in 2023
- Scientific publications increased from 116 in 2014 to more than 34,000 in 2023
- 2023 was a record-breaking year, with 25% of all GenAI patents and 45% of all GenAI scientific papers published
Driving Factors:
- More powerful computers
- Availability of large datasets for training
- Improved AI/machine learning algorithms, particularly transformers
Top GenAI Patent Owners:
Corporations dominate GenAI patent ownership, with some research organizations also making the top 12. China’s Baidu and Tencent lead the pack, followed by Microsoft and IBM.
Country-Level Analysis:
China has published more GenAI patent families than all other countries combined since 2017, with over 38,000 patent families. The U.S. ranks second with around 6,300 patent families between 2014 and 2023.

GANs lead with 9,700 patent families between 2014 and 2023, while LLMs have shown rapid growth in recent years.
