Baseten Grid cuts AI coding costs 70% with smart model routing

Baseten launched a public preview of Grid on November 4, 2026. It’s a routing, gateway, and guardrails layer built specifically for enterprise AI coding workflows. Early access is gated behind a waitlist.

What Baseten Router Benchmarked

The core claim: Baseten Router hit nearly 70% savings in cost per task in initial benchmarks. The tradeoff was a 0.9-percentage-point quality drop compared to Opus 5.5. Whether that tradeoff is acceptable depends entirely on the task, but for bulk coding operations where quality variance is tolerable, the cost math is hard to ignore.

The Problem It Solves

Right now, developers manually decide which approved model handles each coding task. Grid automates that decision. It sits between the developer and the model layer, routing each request to the appropriate model based on factors like cost, capability, and enterprise policy guardrails.

Who This Is For

The product targets enterprises managing multiple approved AI models for coding teams. Solo operators and small teams probably won’t need this level of governance infrastructure today, but the routing logic and cost-per-task framing is worth watching as multi-model setups become standard.

Access is currently through a waitlist.
