Canva AI 2.0 ships with its own frontier models and agentic scheduling

MacBook Pro turned on

Canva announced Canva AI 2.0 at its Canva Create event in Los Angeles, calling it the most significant change to the platform since its 2013 launch. The update goes beyond a feature refresh: Canva has rebuilt the platform around its own in-house foundational models and added agentic scheduling that runs design and research tasks in the background overnight.

Canva’s own models, not borrowed ones

The company’s CORE (Canva Original Research and Exploration) unit, staffed by more than 100 researchers, built three models now shipping inside the platform:

  • Canva Proteus: handles style transfer, runs 2x faster and is 23x cheaper than its predecessor
  • Canva Lucid Origin: generates images 5x faster and 30x cheaper than foundational models
  • Canva I2V: converts images to video cost-effectively

Canva acquired Leonardo AI in 2024, and the CORE team grew out of that acquisition. The company says it can now train, evaluate, and deploy new models in as little as one month.

️ What Canva AI 2.0 actually does

The launch is currently in research preview and covers Canva’s full Visual Suite: presentations, documents, spreadsheets, and social media posts. The headline capabilities:

  • Conversational design: describe an idea or goal by text or dictation and Canva AI builds the starting design
  • Agentic orchestration: once a conversation starts, Canva coordinates across its suite to produce outputs formatted for different channels
  • Object-based intelligence: edit a single element (headline, image, font) without regenerating the whole design, powered by Canva’s Design Model which identifies layers at ingest
  • Living memory: persistent context across projects, pulling from a custom memory library and an about-me profile to stay on-brand

⏱️ The scheduling feature is the one worth watching

Canva now lets you set tasks once and have the AI run them automatically on a schedule. Practical examples from the announcement: produce a batch of social content overnight, scan emails and draft meeting briefing documents, or run web research in the background and feed the results directly into designs.

Constellation Research analyst Liz Miller flagged scheduling as the standout addition:

“You can tell the AI what to do, but telling the AI WHEN you want something done is more important. You can pull research on market shifts at 2 am and provide a brief for recommended social campaigns that can play off of the news from yesterday.”

Connectors and other additions

Canva rolled out connectors for Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Zoom, and Slack. Other additions in the launch include:

  • Canva Code 2.0 with HTML importing: describe an idea and build experiences across devices
  • Sheets AI: spin up a spreadsheet for budget tracking using real data
  • Brand intelligence tools that adopt styles across designs automatically
  • Import of AI-generated artifacts into Canva for further editing and collaboration
  • Template library scaling powered by Canva AI 2.0

For solopreneurs and small teams who already use Canva for content production, the scheduling and object-level editing features are the practical wins here. Regenerating an entire design because you wanted to change one line of text is a real friction point, and the Design Model’s layer-aware approach addresses it directly.
