ChatGPT drives less than 1% of Google’s organic traffic

All the talk about AI killing Google search deserves a reality check. Analyst Marie Haynes ran the numbers across 100 websites and found ChatGPT sent just 0.62% as many sessions as Google organic search.

What the Data Shows

Adding referral traffic from other LLMs on top of ChatGPT brought the combined total to 0.73% of Google organic traffic. That is not a rounding error in Google’s favor. That is a 136x gap.

Conversion data makes the gap even sharper. Google organic still drove 27 times as many conversions as all LLMs combined. ChatGPT visitors did convert at a higher rate per session, which is worth noting, but the volume difference swamps that advantage completely.

The Operator Takeaway

If you have been debating whether to shift SEO budget toward AI visibility tactics, this data says do not abandon the fundamentals yet. A higher conversion rate from ChatGPT referrals is interesting, but 27x fewer conversions in absolute terms means Google organic is still where the revenue actually lands.

Track your LLM referral traffic. Watch the trend. But right now, ChatGPT is a footnote in most site analytics, not a primary channel.
