ChatGPT search hits 20% of Google’s volume, per OpenAI

OpenAI is claiming a significant search milestone: ChatGPT’s search volume has reached roughly 20% of Google Search’s volume. That makes it Google’s biggest search competitor by OpenAI’s own measure.

A few caveats worth noting. The estimate counts prompts that trigger a web search inside ChatGPT. That’s not a direct apples-to-apples comparison with Google’s total query volume. The methodology matters, and OpenAI hasn’t published the full breakdown.

What’s driving the pressure on Google

ChatGPT’s growth is already influencing Google’s product decisions. The company has been expanding AI features inside Search in direct response to the competitive pressure.

On the OpenAI side, the company says users value ChatGPT’s personalization as a key differentiator. OpenAI is also reportedly considering introducing ads to the product.

The operator takeaway

If you run a content site, an SEO-dependent business, or any brand that relies on organic search traffic, this is the trend to watch. A separate Ahrefs study in the same news cycle found that Reddit mentions correlate most strongly with AI search visibility (correlation of 0.75), ahead of general web mentions (0.70) and press coverage (0.67). Brands with 10x more Reddit mentions typically received 5.5x more AI mentions. These are correlations, not proven causes, but the directional signal is consistent enough to factor into your distribution strategy.
