Cognition AI in talks to raise $1B+ at $40B valuation

Cognition AI, the coding startup behind the Devin AI agent, is in early talks with investors to raise more than $1 billion at a valuation exceeding $40 billion, according to Bloomberg.

That would mark a jump of more than 50% from the $26 billion valuation Cognition carried after its last $1 billion round closed in May. The new round is not finalized.

Why This Number Matters

A $40 billion valuation for an AI coding startup that has been public for well under two years signals where institutional money thinks the autonomous coding category is headed. Whether the product performance justifies that multiple is a separate question the round docs will not answer.

For operators building on or competing in the AI dev tools space, this is a benchmark for where the market is pricing category leaders right now.
