Search advertising has always chased the reader. Time magazine is now chasing the crawler.
According to Digiday, Time began converting webpages into AI-friendly formats in June as part of a partnership with adtech company Mobian. Those pages carry sponsored content for Ally Bank, including marketing claims and FAQ-style responses to common banking questions. The intended audience is not a human scrolling a browser. It’s the AI crawler indexing the page.
How It Works
The strategy is straightforward: instead of waiting for an AI model to summarize your editorial content and hope a brand mention survives the compression, you serve content shaped specifically for what AI crawlers retrieve. Time’s pages serve different content to AI crawlers than to human visitors, directly embedding the sponsor’s messaging into what the AI ingests.
Mobian CEO and co-founder Jonah Goodhart is behind the adtech side of the partnership.
The Operator Takeaway
This is a real shift in how brand influence gets built inside AI-generated answers. The traditional playbook (buy display ads, rank organically, hope your brand shows up in Google results) assumes a human at the end of the chain. When the end of the chain is an LLM summarizing sources, the playbook changes.
Time’s model attempts to get sponsored messaging embedded at the retrieval layer, before any summarization happens. Whether that survives at scale, or whether AI labs move to filter it, is an open question. But the experiment is live, it has a named brand sponsor, and it launched in June. That makes it worth watching.
For solopreneurs running content-heavy sites: this is early signal that AI-optimized content formats are becoming a real product category, not just an SEO consultant’s pitch.
