Gemini 3.8 Flash is almost here, with big coding upgrades
Google DeepMind is reportedly close to shipping Gemini 3.8 Flash, a new model with significantly improved coding capabilities, according to a paywalled Wall Street Journal report.
What the Benchmarks Show
Based on internal testing, Google’s engineers found Gemini 3.8 Flash performs better than Anthropic’s Opus, though the specific Opus version was not disclosed. The target competition includes Claude Cowork (powered by Fable or Mythos), xAI-owned Cursor, and ChatGPT’s Codex.
The Gemini 3.5 Pro Cancellation
One notable piece of internal news: Google has reportedly scrapped plans to launch Gemini 3.5 Pro entirely. The next Pro-tier model would only arrive with Gemini 4.0, skipping the 3.5 generation at the Pro level altogether.
Context on Google’s Coding Push
In March, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said 75% of all new code at Google is now AI-generated and approved by engineers, up from 50% the previous fall. Gemini 3.8 Flash appears to be the next step in pushing that capability to external developers.
For solo operators and indie hackers building with AI coding tools, a stronger Flash-tier model from Google means more competition at the mid-tier price point, which historically drives pricing down and capability up across the board.
