Google in $1.5B talks to license Mechanize AI coding tech
Google is in active talks with Mechanize, an AI coding agent startup, to hire some of its staff and sign a non-exclusive licensing agreement for its technology. Business Insider reported the deal on August 5, citing unnamed sources, and put the potential value at over $1.5 billion. The talks are ongoing and details could still change.
Who Is Mechanize?
Mechanize announced its launch in April 2025. The company described itself as focused on building virtual work environments, benchmarks, and training data aimed at enabling what it called the full automation of the economy. In that same announcement, Mechanize said it raised $9.1 million at a $500 million post-money valuation.
The Operator Angle
A non-exclusive license means Google gets access to the technology without locking Mechanize out of other partnerships. That structure keeps options open on both sides. For anyone watching the AI coding agent space, this follows a pattern already visible with OpenAI’s Windsurf acquisition talks and other Big Tech moves to absorb coding AI talent and IP rather than build everything internally.
