One-time passwords and magic links work, but they bleed conversions. Someone fills out your signup form, gets distracted waiting for the email, and never comes back. Google is testing a Chrome feature that could close that gap.
What the Experiment Is
The feature is called Email Verification Protocol (EVP). It lets Chrome verify that a user controls an email address directly in the browser, without sending an OTP or magic link. The verification happens at the browser level, which means the user never has to leave the page to check their inbox.
Why This Matters for Operators
Fewer steps between intent and confirmation means higher completion rates on signup flows. It also has a secondary benefit: if Chrome is doing the verification against a real, browser-associated email address, the quality of the first-party data you collect should improve. Fewer fake addresses, fewer typos, fewer throwaway inboxes.
For anyone running email-driven acquisition, those two outcomes (better conversion rate, cleaner list) are worth watching closely.
The Caveats
This is a test. Google has not announced a rollout timeline or confirmed how EVP would interact with non-Chrome browsers. The details on how the protocol works under the hood have not been published. If your audience skews toward Safari or Firefox users, EVP would not cover them even if it ships.
Still, Chrome holds a significant share of browser traffic. If this graduates from experiment to production, it’s worth building into your signup flow architecture early.
