Linus Torvalds: Linux is not an anti-AI project
Linus Torvalds stepped into a mailing-list debate about Sashiko, an AI-powered system that reviews proposed Linux kernel patches, and made his position clear: Linux is not an anti-AI project.
His argument was pragmatic rather than ideological. AI tools are acceptable in the kernel workflow, as long as they make life easier for human maintainers rather than piling on more work for them to sort through.
Why This Matters for Operators
The kernel community is one of the most rigorous code review environments in open source. If AI-assisted review clears the bar there, the skepticism inside your own team about AI code tools becomes harder to justify on principle alone.
Torvalds is not endorsing AI as a wholesale replacement for human judgment. He is drawing a line: tools that reduce maintainer burden are welcome; tools that generate noise and increase it are not. That is a useful filter for evaluating any AI coding assistant in your own stack.
