Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic are all buying AI coding tools

Three major AI labs are buying up developer tooling at the same time, and the timing is not a coincidence.

Meta is acquiring Conductor, an AI coding startup that lets developers control multiple AI coding agents simultaneously. According to Axios, the deal is intended to strengthen Meta’s AI developer products. CEO Charlie Holtz leads the startup.

The Pattern

On the same day Meta announced Conductor, OpenAI announced plans to acquire Pierre Computer. Anthropic had already moved in May, acquiring Stainless. SpaceX closed its $60 billion acquisition of Cursor in August.

The throughline: the underlying AI models are becoming harder to differentiate on capability alone. The competition is shifting to the layer above the model, the tools developers actually use to build with them.

Why It Matters

If you build products on top of any of these platforms, the developer tooling you use today may be owned by your infrastructure provider tomorrow. That changes the negotiating dynamic and the switching cost calculus in ways worth thinking through now.
