Free Claude Code: 65k GitHub stars, but does it deliver?

A Reddit post advertising Free Claude Code has been making the rounds, promising over 1.3 billion free tokens per month, support for 61 AI providers, and access to popular coding tools without a subscription. That is a bold pitch. Here is what the project actually is, and where the claims hold up.

What It Is

Free Claude Code is an open source project that runs a local proxy between your coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and others) and a range of AI providers including NVIDIA, Groq, OpenRouter, and locally hosted models via Ollama. You are not getting direct Anthropic access for free. You are using the Claude Code interface routed through alternative models. That is an important distinction before you get too excited.

Claim by Claim

The GitHub repo has over 65,000 stars, substantial source code, and an AGPL-3.0 license confirming it is genuinely open source. But popularity does not validate every marketing claim. Here is how the headline promises actually check out:

  • Free and open source: Verified.
  • Supports Claude Code and Codex: Verified.
  • 61 AI providers: Listed in the project.
  • 1.3 billion free tokens monthly: Not guaranteed. The project aggregates free allowances across providers. OpenRouter’s free models, for example, cap ordinary accounts at 50 requests per day on free variants.
  • Unlimited free Claude models: No. You are using alternative models, not Anthropic’s Claude Opus or Sonnet.
  • Up to 90% lower token usage: Depends on workload.

⚠️ Security Before You Install

The default configuration listens on 0.0.0.0 at port 8082 with proxy authentication disabled. If you are running this on a homelab or any machine reachable beyond localhost, that needs to change before you expose it. Lock it to localhost, enable authentication, and read through the installation script first. Also worth noting: remote AI providers mean your prompts and potentially portions of your source code leave your machine.

The Verdict

This is a legitimate open source project for experimenting with AI coding tools across multiple providers from a single local gateway. It is not unlimited free access to premium Anthropic models, and the 1.3 billion token figure is an aggregated ceiling across providers with their own individual rate limits. Good for experimentation. Not a production shortcut. Adjust expectations accordingly.
