Unified SEO and AI visibility strategy lifts traffic for 81% of brands

Semrush published its expanded 2026 AI Visibility Index on June 26, 2026, built on 126 million U.S. AI search queries collected between January and April. The headline finding for any marketer still running SEO and AI visibility as separate workstreams: the gap in outcomes between integrated and siloed approaches is now quantified and it is large.

The 45-point performance gap

Among organizations that manage SEO and AI visibility as a single discipline, 81% reported increased traffic or leads from AI platforms, according to Semrush. Among organizations that keep the two functions separate, only 36% reported the same outcome. That 45-point gap is one of the more concrete numbers available for teams trying to make the case for reorganizing around AI-era discovery.

The traffic data behind that urgency comes from Adobe. AI-referred traffic to U.S. retail sites climbed 1,324% between October 2024 and May 2026. Travel sites saw a steeper rise: 2,215% across the same nineteen-month window. These are channels that barely appeared in most analytics dashboards two years ago.

What most teams still can’t see

The measurement problem is significant. Some 45% of marketing leaders told Semrush they cannot accurately measure their brand’s visibility inside AI-generated answers. Only 9% said they have the tools to track every relevant metric across the AI platforms their customers use. Fewer than one in ten marketing organizations can currently see the channel that is growing fastest.

How the four platforms behave differently

The index covers ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews across 22 industry verticals. The platforms do not cite sources at the same rate. ChatGPT averages 15 citations per response, drawing heavily on Reddit and Wikipedia. Gemini averages just 3 citations per response from a similarly narrow pool. That fivefold difference matters: a brand whose visibility depends on breadth of citation will naturally perform better on ChatGPT than on Gemini.

The index also separates being mentioned from being cited. On Gemini specifically, the overlap between mentioned brands and cited domains can fall as low as 30%, meaning seven in ten domains the platform actually cites belong to entities other than the brand being discussed. A brand can appear frequently in AI answers while a competitor, review site, or forum supplies the underlying source material.

Industry concentration varies

Competitive dynamics differ by vertical. In News and Media, the top three brands account for 82.9% of total category visibility. Consumer Electronics shows similar concentration at 76.9%. Finance and Industrial tell a different story: the top three brands in Finance hold just 41.4% of category visibility, and Industrial sits at 42.2%. Those less concentrated categories may offer more room for mid-sized brands to build AI presence over time.

The operator takeaway

If your SEO team and your AI visibility work report to different people, run in different tools, or operate on different review cadences, Semrush’s data suggests that structure is costing you measurable traffic. The 81% vs. 36% split does not specify which organizational changes drive the difference most directly, but the direction is clear: brands treating the two as one discipline are outperforming those that don’t.
