Vibe coding cut one firm’s $18k/yr SaaS bill to $80/mo
One financial services company was spending between $14,000 and $18,000 a year on software subscriptions, often just to access a single feature per tool. They decided to build their own solution using AI-assisted development instead.
The first build was painful and took roughly two months. But it eliminated that annual software cost entirely. The resulting infrastructure runs on a server costing under $80 a month and supports 60 to 70 users. With an 11-person team, they’re nowhere near the capacity ceiling.
The more telling number came with version two. The same system was rebuilt from scratch in under three days. The second version wasn’t just faster to produce. It eliminated technical debt, added a proper PRD, strengthened security, introduced risk profiling, authentication, backups, and a more robust architecture. Better output in a fraction of the time.
The Broader Shift
Writer Faisal Khan frames this inside a wider industry observation: vibe coding tools like Replit, Lovable, Cursor, and Bolt moved from rough experiments in early 2025 to something approaching mainstream by Q1 2026, with Anthropic and OpenAI both capable of driving the workflow.
The implied threat to the SaaS market is real. If a company with 11 people can cut $14,000 to $18,000 in annual subscriptions by building internally, the cumulative effect across thousands of similar businesses is substantial.
Khan also flags genuine risks: unresolved data privacy questions and the possibility that parts of the AI market are entering bubble territory. On the upside, local models continue to improve and personal hardware tooling is advancing. His estimate is that somewhere between 100 and 200 out of every 400 people may be able to identify a problem, build a solution, and deploy it themselves by 2027, up from roughly 1 in 400 before these tools existed.
For operators already using vibe coding tools, the financial services example is a useful benchmark for what’s now achievable on an 11-person budget.
