Yelp licenses reviews and local data to ChatGPT

Yelp is licensing its reviews, ratings, photos, and local business data to OpenAI, according to Axios. The content will surface directly inside ChatGPT responses when users ask about local businesses.

The deal gives each side something useful. ChatGPT gets a real-time local business data source to compete more directly with traditional search engines on everyday consumer queries. Yelp gets placement and links inside one of the most-used AI interfaces.

Why It Matters for Local Operators

If you run a local business or manage local SEO for clients, your Yelp presence just gained a new distribution channel. A strong Yelp rating and current review volume could now influence what ChatGPT recommends when someone asks for a nearby restaurant, plumber, or salon.

AI assistants are taking a growing share of queries that used to go to Google Maps and Yelp directly. This partnership is Yelp’s hedge against that shift: if users are asking ChatGPT instead of searching Yelp, Yelp wants to be the data layer powering the answer.
