55% of users are posting less: what social fatigue means for your reach

Social media audiences are not just shrinking in attention. They are actively withdrawing. Research from Incogni puts numbers to what many operators have been feeling in their analytics for a while.

The Data

  • 55% of users are posting less than they used to.
  • 53% are limiting who can see their content.
  • 47% have deleted apps entirely due to stress.
  • Over half say maintaining a presence feels like work, particularly Gen Z.
  • 44% cite political content as a reason to disengage.

Even stepping away is complicated. Among those who did pull back, 27% reported feeling peaceful afterward, while 22% felt anxious. Platforms have become obligations, not optional connection tools.

What This Means for Your Distribution

If you are building an audience on social, your organic reach is competing with users who are already fatigued and actively narrowing their feeds. The pool of people posting, engaging, and amplifying your content is getting smaller.

The CMO title shift adds context here. Only 36% of Fortune 500 companies still carry the CMO title, down from 49% the prior year. Marketing is being folded into revenue and growth functions, with roles like Chief Growth Officer and Chief Commercial Officer taking over. Fewer marketing leaders now report directly to the CEO, down to 52%. The structural pressure to show direct revenue impact from social investment is rising at the same moment audiences are pulling back from the platforms.

The Operator Takeaway

Two shifts worth watching. First, owned channels (email, newsletters, communities you control) become more valuable as social engagement drops. Second, platforms where content has a longer shelf life, such as Reddit, which Google Search and AI chatbots now cite more frequently, may deliver more durable returns than the feed-based platforms driving fatigue.

If you are allocating time or budget to social in 2026, the audience behavior data suggests owned distribution deserves a larger share of that mix.
