Organic click-through rates are falling. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews answer queries directly, without sending users to your site. For local businesses, that means a second visibility objective has emerged alongside traditional SEO: getting your content cited by AI systems when they generate those zero-click answers.
The practice has a name: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO). It means structuring and formatting web content so that AI-powered search platforms, including Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, and ChatGPT, are more likely to reference it when building responses for users.
Local Falcon published a detailed breakdown of how to execute this. Here are the seven core strategies.
1. Open every article with the direct answer
AI retrieval systems favor content that answers the question immediately, before adding context. An HVAC company writing about AC service frequency in Florida should open with: “In Florida’s climate, most HVAC professionals recommend servicing your air conditioning system twice a year.” That single sentence is extractable. Three paragraphs about Florida summers before the answer is not.
Apply the same logic at the section level. Each H2 or H3 heading should be followed by a direct, self-contained answer in one to three sentences, with supporting detail after. More extractable passages per article means more chances for citation.
2. Target questions, not just keywords
“Estate planning attorney Chicago” is a keyword. “What’s the difference between a will and a trust?” is a question, and it’s what ChatGPT users actually type. Build a question inventory by pulling from Google’s People Also Ask boxes, reviewing what your team hears most from clients, and testing queries in AI visibility tools to see which sources get cited. Prioritize high-intent, specific questions: “What permits do you need to build a fence in [city]?” outperforms “What is a building permit?” for local AI visibility.
3. Format for extraction
HTML structure affects whether AI systems can parse your content. The formats that consistently improve extractability:
- Answer-style headings instead of clever or vague ones
- Numbered lists and bullet points for process or comparison content
- Comparison tables
- Definition blocks: short, clearly labeled explanations of a term
- FAQ sections, which can generate multiple citations from a single page

4. Build topical depth, not breadth
AI systems favor sources that demonstrate deep, consistent expertise on a topic over sources that cover many topics shallowly. For a local dental practice, a pillar post on cosmetic dentistry supported by individual articles on whitening, veneers, bonding, and smile makeovers, all internally linked, builds a stronger AI visibility signal than one standalone article on cosmetic dentistry.
Anchor text matters here. “Compare dental veneer options” signals topical relevance. “Click here” does not. Also: AI Overviews show a preference for recency on time-sensitive topics, so a content refresh cadence matters as much as a publishing cadence.
5. Add credibility signals to the content itself
Research on AI citation behavior points to credibility as a selection factor. Content that includes citations to authoritative sources, original data, expert quotes, and verifiable statistics gets cited more frequently than unsupported claims. A financial advisory post that references IRS guidance or Federal Reserve data outperforms one that makes the same points without attribution.
Original data carries particular weight. If you survey your own clients and publish the findings, that data exists nowhere else. AI systems optimizing for accurate, differentiated answers are incentivized to cite it. Author credentials matter too: posts authored by named professionals with noted credentials perform better in AI visibility than anonymous content.
6. Write local knowledge into the content
For local businesses, AI citation has a geographic dimension. An electrician’s post that references local code requirements, common wiring issues in older homes in their area, and the county-specific permitting process reads as more credible to AI systems than a generic post with a city name inserted in the title. Neighborhood guides, city-specific service comparisons, and local regulation explainers build the geographic authority that surfaces your business when location is a factor in the query.
7. Extend your presence off-site
AI systems evaluate authority partly through how your content is referenced across the broader web. Guest articles in reputable industry publications, local news mentions, active review platforms, and a well-maintained Google Business Profile all contribute to the authority profile AI considers when selecting citations. Repurposing a blog post into a YouTube video, a LinkedIn article, and a Reddit answer in a relevant community creates multiple citation pathways for the same expertise. Each platform where your insights appear accurately adds another reference node that AI systems use to assess credibility.
The workflow in short
Before writing: confirm the specific question the piece will answer. During drafting: lead with the direct answer, use clear structural formatting, support claims with sources, add an FAQ section where it fits. Before publishing: check that headings are question-oriented, the opening paragraph is immediately extractable, and schema markup is applied. After publishing: monitor AI visibility for your target queries and refresh content that is not getting cited.
The underlying principle has not changed. Clear, authoritative, well-structured content has always performed well in search. AEO adds one more measure: whether an AI answer engine trusts it enough to quote it.
