AI local search jumped 6x in a year — and 81% still verify before visiting

One number tells the story: the share of U.S. consumers who used an AI tool to find a local business in the last 30 days jumped from 9% in 2025 to 52% in 2026. That is close to a sixfold increase in a single year, according to research from SOCi.

But adoption and trust are two different things. When an AI tool recommends a business, 81% of consumers still take a verification step before acting. They check reviews (33%), the business’s social media (20%), search (16%), or multiple sources at once (12%). SOCi calls this the verification loop.

Who Is Using AI for Local Search

AI adoption for local search skews heavily toward income. Regular AI use sits at 47% among consumers earning under $50,000 a year and climbs to 76% among those earning $100,000 or more. Higher earners are both earlier adopters and more frequent users.

Trust, meanwhile, is not keeping pace with usage. Only 27% of consumers say their trust in AI has grown over the past year. That means 73% have seen no confidence increase, and 23% say their trust has actually declined.

The reason is easy to trace: among AI users, 67% report being given wrong information about a local business at least once, and 30% say that bad information caused a real inconvenience.

Where Reviews and Social Still Win

Despite the AI surge, reviews remain the backbone of local trust. Ninety-nine percent of consumers read reviews before a first visit at least some of the time, and 68% do so always or most of the time.

Responses to negative reviews carry real weight. Sixty-five percent say they would be more likely to revisit a business after a helpful response to a negative review, and 87% say they would consider revising that review to a positive one. Seventy-two percent favor businesses that respond to reviews at all.

Social converts too. Fifty-nine percent say a social post or video has turned them into a customer of a local business. That figure climbs to 70% among Millennials and stays above half for Gen X (54%) and Gen Z (52%), while dropping to 22% among Baby Boomers.

The Operator Takeaway

If your local business or your clients’ local businesses are not showing up cleanly in AI tools, you are losing the first filter. But the verification loop means your reviews, your social presence, and your response behavior still determine whether an AI-driven lead converts. Getting found by AI is table stakes. What closes the visit is the same thing it has always been: social proof that looks current and responses that signal someone is paying attention.
