AI Overviews are sending real traffic, but your analytics are probably lying about how much. A nine-month study covering more than 51,000 tracked events puts some hard numbers on what’s actually happening.
What the Data Shows
AI Overviews accounted for 7.53% of organic sessions over the study period. That’s meaningful volume, but 22.4% of those AIO-driven events were misattributed to Direct in standard GA4 reporting. If you’re not actively surfacing AIO traffic, you’re undercounting it.

What Google Favors in AI Overviews
Google’s citation behavior skewed toward specific, structured content. The formats that earned citation share most consistently:
- Pricing information
- Travel times and routes
- HTML comparison tables
Stale content lost citation share over time. Freshness and structure aren’t optional if you want to stay cited.
️ What to Do With This
Two practical moves come out of the data. First, surface the #:~:text= signal in GA4 to track AIO traffic directly instead of relying on standard attribution. Second, use citation data to prioritize which content gets updated first. Treat any current AIO traffic level as a starting point, not a baseline you can count on holding.
