Four platform changes landed in the same week, each one shifting a bit more campaign control away from the advertiser. Here is what changed and what to do about it.
Microsoft AI Max is now on by default for some campaigns
Microsoft Advertising began rolling out AI Max globally across all accounts on 19 August. The suite has three components: search term matching that reaches beyond keyword lists using ads, landing pages, and intent signals including conversational queries in Bing and Copilot; text customisation that generates messaging variations from existing assets and site content; and final URL expansion that picks the landing page it judges closest to intent.
AI Max is opt-in for new and existing campaigns, with one exception. If you were already running autogenerated text assets or Predictive matching, those settings have been moved under the AI Max umbrella with matching switched on. Microsoft says it will not auto-activate the other features.
Controls are available at launch: brand controls, term exclusions for text generation, URL rules, ad group-level settings, and optimisation experiments. Imported Google Ads Search campaigns keep their AI Max settings, except that AI Max campaigns originally from upgraded Dynamic Search Ads get converted back to DSA campaigns on Microsoft.
What to do: Check any Microsoft campaigns that used autogenerated text assets or Predictive matching. A setting changed without you choosing it.
Meta’s AI advisor recommends spending more on Meta

Meta expanded Meta AI for small businesses on 20 August. Advertisers can now connect Meta ad campaigns and Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides) directly to the assistant. It analyses campaign performance, identifies which audiences are working, finds patterns across top creative, flags ads that have stopped landing, and points to budgets it thinks could work harder. It can produce decks, documents, and spreadsheets from that analysis, and advertisers can schedule recurring reviews.
The structural issue: the system recommending how to reallocate spend is owned by the platform receiving it, and its suggestions carry no view on incrementality or profitability.
What to do: Treat the output as a faster first draft of analysis, not a decision. Keep your own incrementality read as the thing that actually settles budget arguments.
YouTube view counts will jump on 24 August, but audiences did not grow
From 24 August, YouTube counts a public view from the first frame across every format. Long-form videos and live streams previously required roughly 30 seconds of watch time before a view was counted. Shorts already counted from playback. The old measure survives as engaged views and engaged watch hours inside YouTube Analytics under Advanced Mode. Earnings and Partner Programme eligibility are unaffected and stay tied to those engaged metrics.
What to do: Rewrite influencer deal terms and campaign reporting to name engaged views specifically. Rebaseline any YouTube benchmark set before 24 August, because a view-count jump after that date almost certainly reflects the methodology change, not a bigger audience.
ChatGPT ads reach 31 European markets, but only six agency groups can buy
Ads started serving to ChatGPT users across 31 European markets on 24 August, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands. That takes the ads business, launched as a US pilot in February, through Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea in six months.
Buying runs through Publicis, Omnicom, WPP, Havas, Dentsu, and MediaPlus at launch only. A self-serve platform for smaller advertisers is coming with no date attached. The US version arrived this spring with a $50,000 minimum that has since been dropped. OpenAI posted a new EU privacy policy on 14 August. Cost-per-click accounts for most of the spend on the platform, and OpenAI’s VP of Ads Dave Dugan has put ChatGPT at over 900 million weekly users with roughly 20% of queries carrying direct commercial intent.
What to do: If you are not with one of those six holding groups, your European entry point is a waiting list. Use the gap to build intent-led copy and landing pages the format rewards.
