AI vibe coding is creating a new senior engineer role
The AI coding wave was supposed to reduce demand for senior engineers. The opposite is happening. A new specialist role is emerging specifically because AI-generated code ships faster than it gets verified.
The numbers behind the gap
Microsoft and Google CEOs have both claimed roughly a quarter of their companies’ code is now AI-generated. Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey found 65% of developers use AI coding tools at least weekly. A quarter of Y Combinator’s Winter 2025 batch reported codebases that were 95% AI-generated.
Speed gains are real. Quality accountability is not keeping pace. The OECD’s AI Incidents and Hazard Monitor recorded roughly 50 media-reported AI-related incidents per month in 2020. By January 2026, that figure had reached nearly 500 per month, with the rate doubling in the past twelve months alone.
Where the gap hurts most
In regulated industries, healthcare and banking in particular, a logic flaw in a diagnostic workflow or a misconfigured access control in a clinical data platform does not just create technical debt. It can delay a trial, trigger an audit, or put patient data at risk. The fix does not come from re-prompting. It comes from an engineer who understands the system, the regulatory context, and the code well enough to trace what broke and why.
That is what the author calls the vibe code cleanup specialist: experienced engineers working downstream of AI-assisted pipelines, not rewriting everything the model produces, but identifying what it got subtly wrong. Logic errors, security misconfigurations, dependency issues, and control flow problems that compile and pass basic tests but fail under real conditions or regulatory scrutiny.
The core issue
As MIT Technology Review noted in its December 2025 investigation, productivity gains from AI coding tools are real in some contexts and largely illusory in others. The difference almost always comes down to how much human judgment is applied to what the AI produces. Generating code is not the same as validating it, and the engineers who understand that distinction are going to be in high demand, particularly in compliance-heavy sectors.
