Google held its first dedicated Android developer conference since 2022 this week at Bay View in Mountain View, California. The two days produced announcements with real planning implications for anyone shipping Android apps or eyeing the XR space. Here is what happened and what it means for your roadmap.
Android Studio is now agent-agnostic
The headline move: Bring Your Own Agent (BYOA) is now stable in Android Studio Rabbit 2. Until now, Gemini was the default and effectively the only agent with deep IDE access. That changes with this release.
Developers can install any of more than 40 AI coding agents directly into Android Studio, provided the agent complies with the Agent Client Protocol (ACP). Confirmed compatible at launch: Anthropic’s Claude Agent, OpenAI Codex, and Google’s own Antigravity. Each agent gets the same native IDE access: project structure, build understanding, symbol resolution, Compose Preview rendering, the Emulator, Logcat, and profiling tools.
The underlying standard is ACP, a JSON-RPC 2.0-based wire protocol originally published by Zed Industries in August 2025. The consortium now governing it includes Zed, JetBrains, GitHub, Google, and Cognition. The best analogy is to what Microsoft’s Language Server Protocol did for language tooling in 2016: LSP let any compliant language server work in any compliant editor, eliminating per-editor integration work. ACP does the same for AI coding agents. Write the protocol once, run anywhere.

Google also shipped official Android CLI plugins for both Claude Code and Codex. In internal testing, agents using the android preview command completed UI tasks 77% faster while using up to three times fewer tokens compared with agents that lacked access to it. The command gives agents the ability to render Compose Previews for visual validation without launching an emulator.
The 2027 Play Store foldable gate is real
Google confirmed that starting in 2027, the Play Store will formally evaluate foldable app quality and award boosted visibility and prominent placement to apps that meet the bar. Apps that do not meet it will not be removed from the store, but will face a discovery disadvantage on the world’s largest Android distribution channel.
This converts five years of soft guidelines into a distribution mechanic. Google has published adaptive design documentation since at least 2022 with no enforcement. The 2027 gate creates a commercial incentive that recommendations alone could not.
The specific quality requirements will be published later in 2026. That gives development teams a narrow window to scope the work before the criteria are fixed. If foldable optimization is not currently on your roadmap, the deadline is the financial argument that puts it there.
To help developers prepare, Google updated the Compose adaptive skill, an AI-powered capability that can audit a Compose UI and automatically implement keyboard shortcuts, custom pointer cursors, hover states, and tooltips; migrate navigation patterns; refactor layouts to Grid, Flexbox, and mediaQuery; manage end-to-end state; and convert media and camera screens into tabletop layouts suitable for foldable-posture use. The skill also helps apps scale to Googlebook, Google’s new laptop category, from a single codebase.
Android XR developer tools hit stable
The practical barrier to building Android XR apps has been the combination of unstable APIs and scarce hardware. Both barriers fell at the summit.
The Core Jetpack XR SDK libraries are now stable: Jetpack SceneCore, ARCore for Jetpack XR, and XR Runtime. Stable means long-term API stability and backward compatibility guarantees, which is the threshold at which commercial investment in XR development stops being a gamble on API churn.
XR emulators in Android Studio also reached stable, covering display glasses, audio glasses, and XR glasses. Developers can customize testing environments with their own 360-degree photos or a live camera feed, and pair virtual phones with virtual glasses through an updated Pairing Wizard. Developers who have been waiting for hardware to start building XR experiences no longer need to wait.
The Android XR Engine Hub is also now stable, providing dedicated workflows and performance trace access across Unity, Godot, and Unreal. Geospatial APIs that anchor digital content to specific real-world locations with spatial tracking have landed in both the ARCore for Jetpack XR SDK and Unity.
XREAL AURA: first Android XR glasses on pre-order at $1,099
XREAL and Google announced the XREAL AURA on stage during Day 1. It’s the first wired XR glasses powered by Android XR, co-developed with Qualcomm on the Snapdragon Reality Elite platform.
Key specs: Sony micro-OLED displays running at 120 Hz, 70-degree field of view, built-in Bose speakers, adjustable electrochromic dimming, and electrochromic lenses. The frame weighs under 95 grams (3.35 oz). Compute lives in a separate puck that clips to the waistband, keeping the glasses light by offloading the Snapdragon processor, battery, and heat output.
Pre-orders opened October 28 at XREAL.com and at Best Buy in the United States. Launch pricing is $1,099 through December 2026. Regular pricing after the promotional window is $1,279 (12 GB RAM / 256 GB storage) or $1,499 (16 GB RAM / 512 GB storage). Shipping begins mid-November. The device launches with 150 confirmed XR experiences. Initial availability covers the US, Canada, Japan, and South Korea. Europe is not in the first launch window.

⚠️ What XREAL buyers should factor in
XREAL (Beijing Xreal Co., Ltd.) is headquartered in China, with global headquarters in Shanghai’s Pudong district. Investors include state-owned Pudong Venture Capital Group and Alibaba Group.
Chinese companies are legally subject to China’s National Intelligence Law (2017), whose Article 7 requires that all organizations and citizens must support, assist, and cooperate with national intelligence work. The Data Security Law (2021) and the Cybersecurity Law (2017) add government access provisions for data held by Chinese companies. These are operative legal conditions, not contested claims, and they apply regardless of where servers are located or what a privacy policy states.
XREAL AURA collects images from three onboard cameras, voice input processed by Gemini, and spatial tracking data including head position and hand movement. No independent security audit of the device has been published. XREAL AURA is not currently on the FCC’s Covered List, the regulatory mechanism used to restrict Chinese hardware with confirmed national security concerns.
Buyers who want to limit exposure can restrict camera and microphone permissions to specific applications in Android XR settings and segment the device on a separate network. No available mitigation fully resolves the underlying legal obligation. Google’s four Android XR hardware partners are XREAL, Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster. XREAL AURA is the only one commercially available today.
Android 18 and Compose 1.13: what’s coming next
One of the less-publicized signals from the summit was an early look at Android 18, surfaced as a conference session on new graphics features. The session previewed mesh gradients (colors blending from multiple points across a surface) and progressive blurs, with guidance on implementing them without sacrificing battery life or frame rate. For context, Android 17 reached stable on June 16, 2026. An Android 18 preview in late October represents an unusually early look at the next major release.
Compose 1.13 has a confirmed stable release incoming, bringing Grid and Flexbox to stable and adding Progressive Blur and Formatted Text as framework-level capabilities. AppState, a new alpha API, brings Compose’s reactive model down to the architecture layer, enabling state preservation across configuration changes for both developers and AI agents working on the same codebase.
The bottom line for Android developers
Three decisions are worth making now based on what the summit confirmed:
- Pick your agent. BYOA is stable. Claude Agent and Codex are both confirmed compatible. If you’ve been waiting for official support to swap out Gemini, that support is here.
- Scope foldable work before the requirements drop. Google will publish the specific Play Store quality criteria later in 2026. Planning before the bar is set gives you more flexibility than reacting after.
- Start XR without hardware. The emulators are stable and the SDKs now carry backward compatibility guarantees. The risk calculus for building Android XR experiences changed this week.
