Google officially moved Android Studio Rabbit 2 to the stable channel on October 28, 2026. The headline addition is Bring Your Own Agent (BYOA): a mechanism that lets Android developers connect the AI coding agent they already use directly inside the IDE, rather than relying solely on the built-in assistant.
How BYOA Works
The integration runs on Agent Client Protocol (ACP), an open standard for connecting AI agents to code editors. Because any agent that speaks the protocol can plug in without Google writing a custom bridge, support for more than 40 agents came quickly. Google names Claude Agent, OpenAI’s Codex, Junie, and Google Antigravity as examples.
Connected agents get access to the full Android Studio toolset: the Android Emulator, the build systems, and Logcat. That means an agent can run builds, launch the emulator, and read results rather than just suggesting code in a chat window.
Setup is short. Open the agent window, select an agent from the list or navigate to Settings > Tools > AI > Agents, then authenticate and submit a first prompt. Consumer subscriptions, enterprise plans, and API keys are all accepted depending on the provider.
One Documentation Catch
A setup subsection in Google’s release notes still points users to the latest Canary build even though Rabbit 2 is stable. When following the instructions, confirm you are downloading from the stable channel, not a preview build.
️ Other Changes in Rabbit 2
- Android XR emulators now stable. Emulators for XR glasses, audio glasses, and display glasses are ready, so developers can build and test Android XR experiences on a laptop.
- LeakCanary integration. Android Studio’s built-in agent now works directly with LeakCanary to diagnose and fix memory leaks without leaving the IDE.
- Android Skills Manager. Discover, install, and manage agent skills from the Agent panel’s three-dot menu, by typing
@in chat, or viaSettings > Tools > AI > Skills Manager. - AI Change Review. Launches from Agent Changes, Pending Commits, or the Git Log. Flags recommended fixes and groups related changes by theme in a guided walkthrough.
- Gemini Enterprise support. Full governance, data privacy controls, and internal knowledge base integration have been available since Rabbit 1 for teams that need them.
Pricing
The built-in agent remains available at no extra charge. Third-party agents operate under each provider’s own plan and pricing. Check the provider’s terms before rolling a team onto one.
BYOA first appeared in Rabbit 2 Canary 2, with the Canary debut dated September 24 by Rohit AI. The October 28 stable release is what makes it viable for production projects.
