AWS adds agentic workspace to Kiro with async task handoff

AWS just shipped a new open source workspace for its Kiro AI coding tool called Kiro Crew. The core pitch: assign a task to an AI agent and let it run asynchronously while you work on something else.

What Kiro Crew Does

The workspace lets application developers hand off tasks to an AI agent that operates autonomously. One concrete example from the announcement: the agent can test code as it is being written, without the developer needing to trigger or monitor each step manually. Context is preserved across multiple sessions, so the agent does not lose the thread when you close your laptop and come back the next day.

The Reusable Skills Angle

Darko Mesaros, a distinguished developer advocate at AWS, noted that Kiro Crew can also create reusable AI skills. It does this by observing the tasks developers assign to Kiro as they write code. Over time, those observed patterns become repeatable skills the agent can run on its own.

Mesaros also described Kiro Crew as comparable in capability to general-purpose AI agents like OpenClaw, but purpose-built for application developers rather than broad use cases.

The Operator Angle

If you are a solo developer or a small team running on AWS, this is worth watching. Async task execution with session persistence solves a real friction point: AI coding assistants that forget context when you context-switch. The open source release means you can inspect and extend it without waiting on an AWS roadmap.
