Azure SQL gets agent skills and a free dev hub for AI coding
Your coding agent picks the path of least resistance. If it can get a database running in the first few minutes, that database wins. Microsoft is trying to make Azure SQL that database.
Two open source tools shipped this week to support that goal: Microsoft SQL Agent Skills and the Azure SQL Developer Hub. Both are live now.
️ Microsoft SQL Agent Skills
Agent skills are instruction sets your coding agent loads before it starts working. The Microsoft SQL Agent Skills cover the topics where agents tend to go wrong with Azure SQL: connecting via Microsoft Entra (no passwords), connection pooling, schema design and migrations, query troubleshooting, and vector search.
Install once per agent. For GitHub Copilot CLI:

Azure SQL Developer Hub
The Hub is a starting point: get a free database in three steps, then pick a prompt that matches what you want to build. Each prompt walks the agent through the scenario and ends with checks you can run yourself to verify the result.
The six available starting points:
- Task-list web app in JavaScript / Next.js
- Task API in Python
- RAG search over text in Python with AI
- Serverless task API in .NET / Azure Functions
- Data-change function trigger in .NET / Azure Functions
- Customer-isolated task data in JavaScript with row-level security
Every page on the Hub has a Markdown version, and there is an llms.txt at the root so your agent can read the Hub directly. Every prompt is tested against a real coding agent and a real Azure SQL database before it ships.
The Operator Angle
If you are building a solo SaaS or a client project and your agent keeps fumbling SQL setup, the skills solve a real friction point. The free database tier means you can prototype without a billing commitment. The Hub prompts are worth scanning even if you do not follow them exactly: they show the agent-friendly path through authentication, schema, and query design for each stack.
No paid database required for any of the six scenarios. The free Azure SQL offer covers all of them. You upgrade when you are ready.
