ChatGPT ads get visual formats, but bot clicks are already a problem

OpenAI is expanding its advertising push inside ChatGPT with visual ad formats, broader conversion measurement capabilities, and more third-party measurement companies joining the ecosystem.

What OpenAI Is Adding

The update moves ChatGPT ads beyond text. Visual formats are coming in, and the company is expanding the measurement infrastructure to give advertisers more signal on what is actually converting.

The Bot Click Problem

Here is the catch. TrafficGuard analyzed three weeks of ChatGPT ad traffic across 47 advertisers and found invalid click rates ranging from 0.1% to 34%. That is a wide band, and the top end is a real budget leak for anyone running performance campaigns in the channel.

TrafficGuard co-founder and CEO Mathew Ratty flagged the findings. The U.S. is the primary market in focus for these ads.

The Operator Takeaway

ChatGPT is competing directly with Google for search advertising dollars. Visual formats and third-party measurement are table stakes for that fight. But the invalid click variance is wide enough that any advertiser testing this channel should set up independent measurement before scaling spend. A 34% invalid click rate at the high end means roughly one in three clicks could be non-human, which makes CPA math unreliable until you have a clean baseline.
