Claude Code gets a Mods system for in-tool customization

Anthropic just shipped a Mods system for Claude Code, and it is worth paying attention to if you build on top of AI coding tools.

What Mods Does

Mods is middleware that runs directly inside Claude Code. Developers write extensions in JavaScript or TypeScript and use them to reshape how the tool looks and behaves. Three core capabilities:

  • Custom panels: Add your own UI elements alongside the chat interface.
  • Tool call interception: Intercept and modify what Claude does before it acts.
  • New commands: Wire up entirely new commands inside the tool.

The Operator Angle

This is essentially a plugin system for an AI coding assistant. If you have repetitive workflows inside Claude Code, custom review steps, or team conventions you want enforced automatically, Mods gives you a hook to build that in-tool rather than wrapping it externally. JS and TS support keeps the barrier low for most dev teams.
