Claude Opus 5 leaked via Fable 5 fallback routing
Anthropic has not announced Claude Opus 5. It may have surfaced anyway.
A screenshot circulating on X and in AI developer circles shows a Claude conversation where the model picker displays “Opus 5 High” and a note reading “Switched to Opus 5.” The user had asked for research ideas across several fields. The screenshot also shows an option to “Edit and retry with Fable 5,” suggesting Opus 5 appeared as a fallback rather than a direct selection.
How the Fable 5 fallback works
Anthropic’s Fable 5 setup includes routing logic for sensitive request categories. When Fable 5’s classifiers flag a prompt in areas like cybersecurity, biology, chemistry, or model distillation, Anthropic routes that session to Opus 4.8 instead. A second screenshot, attributed to an Anthropic employee, suggests Fable 5’s biology classifiers were triggered here because the prompt touched several research fields at once, causing Claude to drop the session to another model.
If the screenshots are accurate, that model was Opus 5, not Opus 4.8. That would suggest Anthropic is already testing Opus 5 as the new fallback destination for at least some Fable 5 guardrail cases.
What else is reported
- Opus 5 was expected to launch this week but the release appears to have been delayed at the last minute.
- Some users who believe they were routed to the new model report stronger visual and coding output, including detailed 3D SVG generation.
- Opus 5 is reportedly very token-hungry, which matters given Anthropic’s existing limits on Fable 5 access.
- The delay may be tied to compute cost as well as safety validation.
Anthropic has made no public announcement. The screenshots should be treated as an early signal, not a confirmed launch date.
