Vibe-coded TV debloat tools remove ads and tracking on Android TVs

Three open-source projects went viral over the weekend for doing something TV manufacturers would rather you not think about: stripping the ads, trackers, and bloatware from your smart TV without touching the firmware.

The Three Projects

Cleanyourtv (previously called tv-vibehack until recently), tv-detox, and dumbtv all target the same problems on Android TV and Google TV devices. According to their GitHub pages, all three can remove sponsored ads, debloat the interface for faster performance, and block the data collection that tracks viewing habits. All three also replace the stock launcher with a simpler one by default.

Compatible hardware includes TCL, Hisense, Sony, and older Amazon Fire products. Some Fire TV devices running a custom Android fork are also supported, though the projects likely do not work on the newer Vega-based Fire TV Sticks.

How They Work

None of these require root access or firmware modification. They use Android’s built-in developer mode and the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to apply and remove packages. Because everything runs through standard developer tools, the changes are reversible.

Custom launchers are installed using Android’s native ability to swap out the default launcher. Several users are going further, using Claude Code or similar tools to vibe-code entirely custom launchers from scratch, including at least one Pokemon-themed replacement shared publicly.

The Operator Angle

If you own a TCL, Hisense, or Sony Android TV and want a cleaner interface without paying for a separate streaming device, this is a no-root path to get there. The reversibility is the key detail: if something breaks, you can undo it.
