Cursor vs Claude Code: pricing, models, and which fits your workflow

Two AI coding agents dominate the conversation right now: Cursor and Claude Code. Both can read your project, edit files, and run commands. The differences come down to where each one lives and what it costs you to use Claude models specifically.

️ Cursor: the AI-first editor

Cursor started as a standalone AI code editor. It is now sold as part of The X Subscription, a bundle that also covers Grok and X. Your paid plan includes a weekly usage pool for Cursor’s own models, and that pool is shared with Grok apps.

The catch for Claude users: Claude, GPT, and Gemini are available only on Premium and above, billed at API list price from prepaid credit. The included pool does not cover them. Annual pricing runs $80 for Plus, $300 for Premium, $1,000 for Super, and $2,000 for Ultra. Free and Plus plans do not get third-party models at all.

Key features on Cursor include Plan Mode for scoping larger changes before you build, a CLI with interactive and print modes for CI pipelines, Cloud Agents that keep running while you step away, and a Cursor Router on Teams and Enterprise plans that picks a model per request. It also integrates with GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Linear, and JetBrains.

Claude Code: the terminal-first agent

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool. It started in the terminal and now runs as a VS Code extension, a desktop app, and in the browser. You keep your existing editor and run the agent alongside it. VS Code, JetBrains, and Vim all work.

Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan: Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Terminal work and regular Claude chats draw from the same usage pool. Pro is $20 a month billed monthly. Usage limits reset on a rolling five-hour window. Max gives you 5x or 20x the usage of Pro. For heavier sessions, pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account are also an option.

Automation features are deep: CLAUDE.md project memory files, custom hooks and skills, parallel subagents, scheduled tasks (cloud or local), a Slack integration, and a Remote Control mode that can turn a bug report into a pull request.

How to choose

Pick Cursor if you want an all-in-one AI editor, like switching between Claude, GPT, and Gemini on the same task, or already subscribe to Grok and X. Budget API credit on top of your plan if Claude is your primary model.

Pick Claude Code if you want to stay in your current editor or terminal, want Claude models without paying API rates on top of a subscription, or already pay for Claude Pro or Max. The automation depth (hooks, subagents, scheduled tasks) also skews toward Claude Code for operators who want background agents doing real work.

Many developers use both: Cursor as the editor, and Claude Code running in its terminal for bigger agent jobs.

Both tools support non-interactive modes for scripts and CI pipelines. Either can slot into a build pipeline once permissions are configured carefully.
