Cursor’s Origin takes on GitHub with agent-native code hosting
Cursor shipped an early beta of Origin on August 17, 2026, a Git hosting service built to compete directly with GitHub. It went live to paying Cursor customers the same day GitHub suffered a multi-hour global outage.
What Origin ships with
This is a genuine Git host, not a wrapper around someone else’s infrastructure. The beta includes hosted repositories, pull requests, code browsing, branch protections, and a CLI. It also syncs with GitHub and connects to CI and deployment tools, so teams do not have to abandon existing pipelines to try it.
The defining feature is agent access. Cursor’s agents are wired in as first-class participants. An agent can answer questions about a repository, change code, update a pull request, and push a branch without a human opening a browser tab.
The concentration risk
Origin arrived days after SpaceX reportedly closed a $60 billion acquisition of Cursor. Putting your editor, your agents, and your source of truth inside one vendor is a bet, and the company behind those repositories may keep changing shape. Ownership changes pricing, roadmaps, and support priorities, none of which is under your control.
If you test it, keep a mirror, keep your exports working, and do not let convenience quietly become lock-in.
How to test it without betting the repo
Do not migrate your main product. Pick one internal service, something real but not revenue-critical, and run it on Origin for thirty days. Measure median pull request cycle time, how many reviews an agent handled end to end, and how often a human had to reverse an agent change. Those three numbers will tell you more than any launch announcement.
Origin launched as an early beta: fast iteration and occasional breakage is the deal. Fine for internal tooling, risky for customer-facing systems. Pricing is currently bundled with existing Cursor seat spend.
