DeepSeek is building a Claude Code rival with a 30+ hire push
DeepSeek, the Chinese AI lab backed by High-Flyer hedge fund and founded in July 2023, has been quiet for most of its existence. That changed around August 12, when the company activated official social media accounts and started posting job listings for a brand new product team.
The Harness Team
The team’s name is Harness. Its mandate, announced by senior researcher Deli Chen on May 20, is to build Code Harness: an internally developed code agent positioned as DeepSeek’s direct answer to autonomous coding tools. The competitive targets are explicit in the announcement: Anthropic’s Claude Code, Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, and OpenAI’s Codex.
The Hiring Numbers
DeepSeek currently employs between 160 and 200 people. In June, the company posted more than 30 open roles across multiple departments with a stated goal of doubling the size of every team. Even if they hit that target, the headcount stays well under 500. The company has previously shipped DeepSeek-V3 and R1, models that drew attention for competitive performance despite far fewer resources than the labs they were benchmarked against.
The Operator Takeaway
If you’re building workflows around Claude Code or GitHub Copilot, a well-resourced Chinese lab entering the space adds pressure on pricing and capability. DeepSeek’s open-source track record also means a Code Harness release could land as a self-hostable option, which matters if data privacy or cost per token is part of your decision. Worth watching, not acting on yet.
