Google’s AI push is shrinking publisher search traffic

If your traffic comes from Google, the competitive surface just got smaller. AI features are taking up more real estate on search result pages, and publishers are losing ground as a direct result.

The traffic numbers

41 of the 50 biggest US news sites saw traffic decline year over year. Several publishers have connected those losses directly to AI Overviews and AI Mode. Some are responding by building direct audiences and reducing how much they depend on search referrals.

What else is changing

  • Google added new sports features that surface play-by-play updates and fantasy recommendations directly inside Search, reducing a reason to click through to sports publishers.
  • OpenAI is reportedly restricting some competitor ads inside ChatGPT.

The operator angle

The structural shift here is not subtle. When Google and ChatGPT answer the question inside their own interface, the click never happens. Operators building content businesses on search referrals are now competing for a shrinking pool of clicks, not a growing one.

The publishers reacting by investing in direct audiences (email lists, communities, owned channels) are making the right call. If you run a content-driven site, diversifying off search traffic is no longer optional risk management. It’s standard operating procedure.
