Google’s information gain score: confirmed signal or useful fiction?

Google has never confirmed it runs a literal information gain score. That ambiguity has kept the concept in SEO debate for years, but Ahrefs’ Louise Linehan argues the confirmation question is beside the point.

The real argument: information gain is your differentiator. The extra effort you put into creating genuinely useful content is exactly what separates your article from the ten others ranking for the same keyword. Whether or not Google scores it explicitly, the output of caring about information gain is content that earns links, shares, and return visits.

Why this matters for solo operators

If you’re running a content-driven business on a small team, you can’t win on volume. You’re not going to out-publish a media company. Information gain is the lever that lets a single well-researched piece outperform a dozen thin articles from a larger competitor.

The full Ahrefs guide walks through what information gain actually means and how to build it into your content process. Worth reading before your next editorial calendar review.
