If you’ve been running a “best of” content strategy to capture AI citations, this data is worth sitting with. Growth analyst Kevin Indig pulled 5.32 million organic result rows from 60,000 US-English desktop Google queries across 15 verticals, collected over a 47-hour window in August 2026, and the picture is more complicated than the “listicles are dead” narrative suggests.
Listicles are still everywhere, just not for brands
At least one listicle appeared in the top 10 on 55.1% of search results pages, and in the top three on 32.3%. That is not a dying format. But the type of publisher winning those spots has shifted.
Publishers and content platforms averaged a conditional rank of 3.99 when their listicles appeared in the top 10. Brands and vendors averaged 4.65. In direct matchups on the same SERP, publishers won 54.0% of 4,026 head-to-head comparisons against a brand listicle.

The query type controls everything
Google shows 4.5x more listicles when the query explicitly asks for a set of options. For queries with an explicit list intent, the top-three listicle rate hit 54.5%. For implicit category or comparison queries, that rate fell to 10.2%. For purely informational queries that did not ask for a list, the rate was 12.1%.
In other words: if your target keyword does not literally ask for options, a listicle probably will not rank anyway.
The demotion signal in the January-to-August comparison
Indig compared a fixed subset of 2,400 queries and 24,000 search results between January and August 2026. Only 52.5% of queries had the same URL at position one in both periods. At position one, the listicle rate fell from a January range of 18.9% to 20.2% down to 15.1% to 15.6% in August. Across the top three, January showed 35.9% to 39.0%; August showed 32.0% to 33.0%.
That said, 62% of vendor-authored listicles gained estimated organic traffic since January, and the median page gained 38%. The demotion is real but targeted, not a blanket penalty.
B2B software is the outlier vertical
Brand or vendor listicles appeared in the top 10 on 46.2% of B2B software SERPs, compared with 3.3% in food and 6.2% in travel. B2B software overall reached a 62.5% listicle presence rate. This is where most self-serving AI search optimization is happening, and Google’s AI Overview coverage in B2B reached 93.4% of those same queries.
Reddit and YouTube are eating the clicks anyway
Here is the catch that makes even a top-10 listicle ranking less valuable than it used to be: 92% of SERPs containing a top-10 listicle also had Reddit or YouTube on the same page. Both appeared together on 53% of those SERPs.
- Reddit placed in the top 3 on 70.7% of the pages where it appeared in the top 10, with a median position of 2.
- YouTube placed in the top 3 on 11.1% of those pages, with a median position of 7.
- Reddit ranked above YouTube on 84.5% of the 19,729 SERPs where both appeared in the top 10.
- On explicit list queries, Reddit’s advantage over YouTube rose to 90.4%.
A listicle can hold its organic rank while losing click share to Reddit, YouTube, and AI Overviews all at the same time. The ranking and the traffic are increasingly decoupled.
The operator takeaway
If you are in B2B software, self-serving listicles still show up in search, but you are now competing against publisher listicles that rank higher, Reddit that outranks you on intent-matched queries, and AI Overviews that answer the question before the user reaches your result. The narrow window where a brand listicle alone captured intent is closing. The data says it is not gone, but it is significantly smaller than it was in January 2026.
