How to vet an AI marketing agency in Hertfordshire

Searching “AI marketing agency near me” in Hertfordshire returns a list. It does not return a vetting process. One search of eleven organic results for the county found only four agencies with a registered Hertfordshire address on Companies House. Three of the remaining seven turned out to be London agencies using a shared workspace membership as a local address. That is not fraud, it is just how Google local search works when “near me” is a Business Profile trick rather than a real proximity filter.

The search gets you a starting list. Everything after that is on you.

The six-step vetting process

  1. Search Google Maps, not plain Google. Type “AI marketing agency” and drop a pin on Hertfordshire, then check town by town: Watford, Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Stevenage, Hitchin, Welwyn Garden City, Bishop’s Stortford, Hertford. Maps results tie to a physical Google Business Profile, which filters out “we cover all of the UK” agencies faster than a standard search.
  2. Check Companies House for every name. It is free and public. It shows how long the business has existed, whether the registered address is actually in Hertfordshire, and whether the directors have run anything before. A company incorporated eight months ago is not automatically a bad choice, but you should know that before signing a twelve-month contract.
  3. Look up the actual people on LinkedIn, not the agency page. Does the founder or account director post about AI tools with specificity, or do they share generic content with a stock photo of a robot hand? Specificity is the tell.
  4. Ask for a live demo, not a slide deck. Any agency doing real AI marketing work can show a working automation, a live dashboard, or an actual prompt workflow on a screen share during the first call. A case study PDF means they are selling the idea of AI, not the practice.
  5. Name specific tools and ask what they do with them. Real shops can answer: ChatGPT Team or Claude for content drafting, HubSpot’s AI features or Klaviyo’s predictive send-time tools for email, Semrush’s AI overview tracking or Surfer for SEO, Zapier or Make for connecting systems. If an agency cannot name three tools used weekly and describe exactly what each one does for a client, they are reselling a subscription rather than running a practice.
  6. Ask for one case study with a real number. Not “increased engagement” but something like “cut email production time from six hours a week to ninety minutes” or “lifted qualified leads from 40 to 61 a month.” Vague outcomes usually mean there was no proper before-and-after measurement, which usually means there was no proper strategy.

What real AI marketing work costs here

A genuine AI-integrated retainer in and around Hertfordshire runs £1,800 to £6,000 a month depending on scope. A fixed project fee for something like an AI-driven content and SEO overhaul sits between £2,500 and £12,000. A quote of £600 a month claiming full AI marketing coverage almost always buys a template and a monthly report, not a working system.

Worth knowing: a significant share of AI marketing talent that lives in Hertfordshire commutes into London agencies rather than running local ones. Insisting on in-person meetings in Watford or St Albans narrows your options and typically adds a premium for proximity rather than for better work.

⚠️ Red flags worth walking away from

  • Cannot explain their AI process in plain English
  • Wants a twelve-month contract before you have seen a single deliverable
  • Case studies have no client name attached
  • Quotes a price within minutes of the first call without asking a single question about your business

The option agencies won’t mention

Most small Hertfordshire businesses do not need an agency retainer at the first stage of AI marketing. A good freelance AI consultant can set up the right tools and train one staff member in two or three sessions for under £1,500 total, then hand the system back to you to run. Agency retainers make sense once you have enough volume, content, or campaigns to need full-time attention. Before that point, a £2,000/mo retainer often pays for work a one-off setup engagement would have covered. Agencies rarely lead with this because ongoing retainers are their revenue model, not one-off setup fees.

Agencies doing this well locally share three habits: they show a client dashboard with numbers updated that week, they name specific tasks they have automated (appointment reminders, lead scoring, ad copy variations), and they are upfront about what AI still cannot do without a human editing pass. Anyone who says AI handles everything unsupervised is either new to this or selling something.
