Meta enters the coding-agent race with Muse Code beta

Meta just shipped its answer to Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex. It’s called Muse Code, it runs in your terminal, and it’s now in beta for macOS and Linux.

What Muse Code Does

Muse Code is built on the new Muse Spark 1.2 model, a coding-focused update that Meta says brings gains in code generation, debugging, codebase understanding, and long-running developer workflows. The tool is designed for complex work across large repositories, not just single-file edits.

Key capabilities according to Meta:

  • Plans changes, writes code, and validates its own output
  • Coordinates persistent background agents that stay active throughout a session
  • Keeps a local event log of model calls, tool use, approvals, and edits so work can resume after a crash
  • Built-in commands to generate a plan, stress-test it, or continue toward a specified goal

How to Install It

For Mac users, setup is a single terminal command. There’s no dedicated app currently, unlike Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex. The install instructions are on Meta’s research blog.

Model API Access

Muse Spark 1.2 is also available through the Meta Model API with expanded global access, not just inside Muse Code. The API was introduced with Muse Spark 1.1 in July as Meta’s paid developer service.

The Broader Context

Meta replaced Llama with the original Muse Spark in April, then used it to expand the Meta AI app and power image-generation features across WhatsApp and Instagram. Muse Code is the developer-facing side of that same model rollout.

If you’re already running Claude Code or Codex, Muse Code is worth a look once it clears beta, particularly if you’re working on large codebases where session persistence and background agents matter.
