Meta launches Muse Code, a pay-as-you-go AI coding agent

Meta has entered the AI coding agent market with Muse Code, its first product in this category and a direct challenger to Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s Codex.

What It Is

Muse Code is currently in preview. It installs with a single command and handles end-to-end software engineering tasks: planning changes, writing code, and validating results. It runs on Muse Spark 1.2, Meta’s latest AI model, which was developed and trained alongside Muse Code to improve coding performance.

Like Claude and Codex, it lets users build apps inside a single interface while managing fleets of AI-powered agents across the development process.

Pricing and Enterprise Options

Meta is positioning Muse Code as a lower-cost alternative to the incumbents. It offers pay-as-you-go pricing rather than a flat subscription. Enterprise users get an optional zero-data-retention feature, which matters for teams working on proprietary codebases.

The Context

Muse Code is the latest release from Alexandr Wang, who leads Meta Superintelligence Labs and oversees foundation model development. Wang joined Meta in June of last year as a central part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s effort to retool the company’s AI strategy. Wang declined to share user statistics for the Muse Spark models but described adoption as “exciting and strong.”

For solo developers and small teams comparing coding agents on cost, the pay-as-you-go structure is worth a look once the preview opens more broadly.
