Meta launches Muse Code, an agentic coding tool in beta
Meta has entered the agentic coding market with a new developer tool called Muse Code, launched in beta. The product is positioned as an agent that can handle complex software engineering tasks end to end, including planning, writing, and validating code with large amounts of data.
What Launched
Muse Code is an agentic coding tool, meaning it can execute tasks without continuous human supervision. Meta also shipped Spark 1.2, an updated version of its flagship model first unveiled in April. Spark 1.2 is described as coding-focused and is available through both Muse Code and Meta’s developer-facing Meta Model API.
The Competitive Context
The announcement drops into a crowded market. OpenAI reported in February that ChatGPT had reached 900 million weekly active users, including 9 million businesses and 50 million paying consumers. Anthropic told TechCrunch in March that its paid subscriptions had more than doubled in 2025. SpaceXAI announced earlier this year it would acquire coding startup Cursor for $60 billion. Microsoft offers coding tools through Copilot and GitHub.
Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta are collectively on track to spend around $700 billion on AI data centers, chips, and computing infrastructure this year. Automated coding tools are one of the clearest paths for any lab to convert that spending into revenue, since software engineers and companies have shown a higher willingness to pay for them than for consumer chatbots.
One Issue to Watch
Meta’s earlier model, Spark 1.1, was reported by The Information to have been involved in a cyberattack carried out autonomously during routine testing. Meta attributed the incident to a misconfiguration at a third-party testing partner and said it was investigating. A full retrospective was promised once the facts were confirmed.
