Nielsen buys DoubleVerify for $2.15bn: four ad moves this week

Four things moved the ad industry this week: a $2.15bn acquisition put measurement and verification under one roof, OpenAI added conversion-optimised buying to ChatGPT Ads, Google made its AI search opt-out live, and Pinterest put Q2 numbers behind its shopping assistant pitch.

Nielsen acquires DoubleVerify for $2.15bn

Announced 6 August, Nielsen will buy DoubleVerify in an all-cash deal at $13.60 per share. That is an enterprise value of roughly $2.15bn and a 30% premium to DV’s 60-day volume weighted average price. The combined business projects over $4bn in pro-forma annual revenue and says it will serve clients accounting for more than $300bn in ad spend across a $240bn digital advertising segment.

Nielsen says it will preserve DoubleVerify’s invalid traffic detection, viewability, and brand suitability standards. DV keeps its name and goes private. Closing is expected by Q1 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approval.

The operator implication: audience measurement and media quality verification are about to come from the same supplier. If contractual independence between those two numbers matters to your business, now is the time to ask what your 2027 measurement stack looks like.

ChatGPT Ads adds oCPC, carousels, and two new markets

On 7 August, OpenAI put conversion-optimised cost-per-click (oCPC) into beta for product feed campaigns. Advertisers can now optimise toward conversions while still paying per click, and can clone or bulk-create oCPC campaigns from existing CPC ones.

Automatic Advanced Matching is now the default for all new web pixels. For existing pixels, it switches on automatically on 17 August unless advertisers opt out first. Measurement integrations with Triple Whale, Sonar Optimize, and Hightouch are live, along with deeper pixel validation diagnostics. OpenAI is also testing a multi-product carousel format. ChatGPT Ads launches in Brazil and Mexico this week.

The 17 August pixel change is the one with a deadline. Decide before then whether you want Automatic Advanced Matching running on your existing pixels, rather than finding out after the fact.

Google’s AI search opt-out is live but unmeasurable

The control sits under Settings in Search Console and removes a site from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover’s generative features while leaving normal Search results untouched. It is rolling out to a subset of accounts. The opt-out exists because the UK Competition and Markets Authority imposed a conduct requirement in June.

The reporting needed to evaluate the decision does not exist yet. The generative AI performance report shows impressions from AI features only, with no clicks and no queries. Click data is required from December, and page-level controls are not due until March 2027. NewzDash tracking shows Top Stories carousels now render inside AI Overviews on 15.5% of tracked US trending news results and 17.46% in the UK, raising the question of whether opting out of AI also drops you out of Top Stories. Google has not confirmed that effect.

The practical move: set a traffic and conversion baseline now, before December’s click data arrives, rather than flipping the switch on a guess.

Pinterest posts $1.18bn in Q2 and calls itself a shopping assistant

Q2 results published 4 August showed revenue of $1.18bn, up 18% year on year. Monthly active users hit 640 million. Ad impressions were up 16% and ad pricing up 1%. US and Canada delivered $880m, with ARPU at $8.30.

CEO Bill Ready said Smart Assembly, an AI creative option for brands with no product catalogue, produced a 6% click-through rate lift in early testing. Performance+ campaigns are reporting stronger ROAS. The stated roadmap puts nearly every lower-funnel campaign into an AI-powered best-practice setup, with tvScientific CTV capability folding into Performance+ during 2027.

If Pinterest has been sitting in your upper-funnel-only budget, the Performance+ and Smart Assembly numbers are worth a small lower-funnel test before Q4 budgets lock.
