If you use Cursor as your AI coding environment, there is a date you need to know: November 12, 2026. That is the shutoff date OpenAI has proposed for cutting model access to the platform.
What Happened
SpaceX acquired Anysphere, the startup behind Cursor, for $60 billion in an all-stock deal. The deal was announced in June and closed earlier this month. Once the acquisition completed, OpenAI invoked a change-of-control clause in its contract with Cursor that gave it a limited window to cancel the agreement.
OpenAI stated its reasoning directly in a blog post:
“We are making this choice because we cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within our terms of service, based on our experience with Elon Musk’s companies violating contracts.”
OpenAI also cited X (formerly Twitter, now part of SpaceX) as a prior example of a Musk-owned entity breaching contract terms after he took control.
The Cursor Side
Cursor co-founder Michael Truell, now an executive at SpaceX, responded on X. He said Cursor had been one of OpenAI’s earliest users and had relied on its platform as neutral infrastructure. According to Truell, his team is in active talks with OpenAI to resolve the situation.
What Cursor Users Actually Have Access To
Cursor currently offers models from four sources: SpaceX AI’s Grok models as first-party options, plus frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. If the OpenAI cutoff holds, users would lose access to ChatGPT-based models through the platform but would retain Grok, Claude, and Gemini access.
The Operator Takeaway
The Musk vs. Altman feud has now moved from courtrooms into API contracts. A federal jury ruled against Musk earlier this year in his $150 billion lawsuit against OpenAI, finding he had filed the case too late. The business fallout is continuing regardless.
If your workflow depends on a specific model through Cursor, now is a good time to test your fallback options. Anthropic and Google models are still available on the platform, and the November 12 date gives you time to adapt.
