Reddit dominates 83.9% of Google’s Discussions and Forums results

If you’re trying to compete for visibility in Google’s Discussions and Forums results, you’re largely competing with Reddit. A new data study from Ahrefs makes that point with numbers.

What the data shows

Ahrefs researcher Glen Allsopp and data scientist Xibeijia Guan analyzed Google’s Discussions and Forums SERP feature and found Reddit.com appearing in 83.9% of results worldwide. In the specific SERPs studied, Reddit showed up in 87.8% of results, with an average of 1.29 Reddit links per SERP.

That last number matters. It’s not just that Reddit appears often. It’s that when Reddit shows up, it frequently appears more than once in the same results block.

The operator implication

Google’s Discussions and Forums feature was positioned as a way to surface authentic community conversation in search results. The data suggests it functions more like a Reddit promotion engine in practice.

For solopreneurs and content operators, this has two edges. If you have a presence on Reddit and your threads are landing in this feature, that’s free top-of-funnel visibility you should be tracking. If you’re trying to compete with Reddit in this placement from a standalone blog or forum, the numbers suggest it’s an uphill fight.

What to do with this

  • Check your branded queries. Search your product name plus common questions and see whether Reddit threads are capturing the Discussions and Forums box. If they are, you want to know what’s being said there.
  • Consider a Reddit presence. For topics where you want to own the conversation, a genuine subreddit presence or participation in relevant communities now has measurable SEO upside.
  • Don’t ignore the 16.1%. Reddit doesn’t own every Discussions and Forums result. Understanding what other domains appear and why is the more actionable research question for content strategy.
