Replit Free Mode runs on GPT-5.6 Luna after 80% price cut
Replit has launched a new Free Mode powered by GPT-5.6 Luna, OpenAI’s fastest and most affordable model. The launch follows an 80% reduction in Luna’s API price earlier this year.
What Free Mode Actually Is
Free Mode is not a free subscription tier. It’s a feature available to Replit’s Core and Pro subscribers that lets users ask questions, brainstorm, and complete everyday development tasks without consuming their normal AI usage credits. When a task requires more advanced reasoning, Replit automatically routes the request to GPT-5.6 Sol before returning to Luna. The logic: not every coding task needs the most capable model, and routing accordingly keeps costs down for both the platform and its users.
The routing decision happens automatically. According to one observer quoted in the source, the tradeoff is that users can no longer predict which model ran their request or why, which improves the experience but reduces transparency.

Several founders and operators weighed in on what the shift means in practice.
- Chris Seymour, Co-Founder and Principal at GS Consulting LLC, argues the partnership changes the economics of AI coding by letting people experiment and iterate without tracking token costs on every prompt.
- Stefan Chiriacescu, Founder and CEO of eCommerce Today, frames the real move as removing what he calls “token anxiety.” His company builds internal software with AI and reports that behavior changes when people stop calculating the cost of each request: they explore more, iterate more, and ask follow-up questions they would otherwise skip.
- Janay Trevillion, AI Educator and Founder of The Empire, built two SaaS products with paying subscribers using AI tools and no development background. She sees partnerships like this as continuing to close the gap between having an idea and having a working app.
- Vincent Hua, Founder of MakanIndex.com, built his entire site using AI to write the HTML and Python code despite having no web development experience. He credits AI coding tools as the reason the product exists at all.
- Dieter Blom, Director at Versys Media, argues the next phase of AI coding competition will be won by whoever controls the full build environment, from prompt to prototype to deployment, not by whoever has the most capable model.
What to Watch
Seymour notes that cheap code generation is useful, but dependable software is what customers ultimately pay for. The pressure this partnership puts on competitors to lower prices and simplify workflows is real. Whether it translates into better software quality or just more code volume remains an open question.
