Salesforce announced on October 20 that it plans to acquire customer engagement platform Braze for $5.66 billion. The deal values Braze shares at $47.50 each in cash, a 58% premium over the stock’s October 19 closing price.
Why Salesforce Wants Braze
The stated goal is real-time responsiveness. Braze’s technology helps brands adapt marketing messages as customers browse, buy, and use products. Salesforce’s own Patrick Stokes, president of applications and marketing, described it as technology built to turn live customer behavior into personalized engagement at scale.
An analyst at Futurum Equities told Reuters the deal gives Salesforce a real-time engagement layer that its marketing business has historically lacked. Salesforce expects the acquisition to strengthen its Marketing Cloud business and its broader AI offerings.
Braze’s Customer Base
Braze counts brands including Urban Outfitters, e.l.f. Beauty, Canva, Shopify, and Instacart among its customers. e.l.f. Beauty partnered with Braze and Stitch to expand mobile marketing and boost engagement with its Beauty Squad loyalty program. Between March and September 2023, that program saw monthly mobile app usage increase 125%, according to a Braze case study. In North America, 78 of the top 2,000 online retailers use Salesforce as their ecommerce platform, per Digital Commerce 360 data.
Salesforce’s Acquisition Pace
This deal is part of a busy stretch for Salesforce. In September it closed a $3.6 billion acquisition of Fin, which builds AI agents for customer service. That same month it acquired Contentful for roughly $1.5 billion to support personalized customer experiences. It also announced a separate agreement to acquire Listen Labs, which uses AI agents to conduct customer research and analyze feedback.
On the financial side, Salesforce’s Agentforce product crossed $1.5 billion in annual recurring revenue in its fiscal second quarter, up 240% year over year. Combined with its Data 360 product, ARR reached $3.9 billion. Salesforce said it does not expect the Braze acquisition to affect its fiscal 2027 financial guidance.
The Operator Angle
If you sell through Salesforce’s ecosystem or use Marketing Cloud, Braze’s real-time engagement capabilities are likely to show up in your stack within the next few product cycles. Watch for it in the Marketing Cloud roadmap once the deal closes.
