SideKernel: open-source microVM sandbox for AI coding agents on macOS

AI coding agents run with real permissions on real machines. That’s a security problem most developers quietly ignore.

Researcher Dimitrios Prasakis ran a formative user survey to find out how many AI coding agent users actually sandbox their agents. The answer: fewer than 40%. The survey also identified the top usability barriers keeping the other 60-plus percent from bothering.

The Problem

AI coding agents are untrusted system components by nature, yet they need genuine autonomy on the developer machines they run on. Sandboxes exist to contain that risk, but for local macOS development the open-source options have been few and cumbersome. That friction is why most developers skip isolation entirely.

️ What SideKernel Is

SideKernel is an open-source, local, microVM-based macOS sandbox built specifically for AI coding agents and designed around the usability barriers the survey uncovered. Prasakis compiled a list of available sandboxes, filtered against five inclusion criteria, and ran a comparative analysis across 23 capability tests derived from those barriers.

The result: only a small number of sandboxes are genuinely comparable to SideKernel. Among those, Docker-based sandboxes and SideKernel scored highest on the capability features most relevant to usability.

Why It Matters for Solo Operators

If you’re running Claude, Cursor, or any agentic coding tool locally on a Mac, your agent has access to your filesystem, credentials, and network by default. A microVM sandbox draws a hard boundary around what the agent can touch. SideKernel is the open-source path to that boundary without standing up a full Docker environment.

The paper also serves as a survey of the broader solution space for local, open-source, microVM-based macOS sandboxes, which makes it useful reference material even if you don’t adopt SideKernel itself.
