SpaceX completed its all-stock acquisition of Anysphere, the parent company of AI coding editor Cursor, on August 14, 2026. The deal closed at a $60 billion valuation, making Anysphere a wholly owned subsidiary.
How This Came Together
The courtship started in April 2026 with a strategic partnership. At the time, TechCrunch reported SpaceX had secured an option to buy Cursor for $60 billion or walk away after paying a $10 billion fee for joint work. Few expected the option to be exercised this fast.
Cursor started as a four-person MIT team in 2022. By early 2026 it had reached a $29.3 billion Series D valuation and grown into one of the most widely used AI-powered code editors. Two senior Cursor engineering leaders, Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg, had already moved to xAI and reported directly to Musk before the acquisition closed.

What Cursor Gets: Compute
In April, Cursor gained access to xAI’s Colossus supercluster in Memphis, which runs tens of thousands of Nvidia GPUs. That reduced Cursor’s dependence on models from OpenAI and Anthropic for training. On July 16, xAI and Cursor jointly released Grok 4.5, a model focused on coding, agentic tasks, and knowledge work.
Grok 4.5 benchmarks as reported: 62% on DeepSWE, 29% pass@1 on SWE Marathon, and 83.3% on Terminal Bench. Token efficiency came in at 4.2 times better than leading competitors in some tests, according to the announcement. Pricing is $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output. The model is available directly inside Cursor, with increased quotas for individual and team plan users.
Cursor’s blog post framed the compute angle plainly:
“We will have access to the largest fleet of GPUs in the world, giving us the compute to build stronger models that are also more economical to run.”
SpaceX continues expanding Colossus. Capacity is projected to exceed two gigawatts by end of 2026.

The Strategic Picture
The deal gives SpaceX both a leading developer interface and the underlying model infrastructure, a combination Bloomberg noted helps Musk compete directly with Anthropic and OpenAI in coding tools. SpaceX went public recently, and the Cursor deal followed shortly after the IPO. SpaceX engineering data reportedly now trains future Grok models, alongside data from X posts and Tesla codebases.
Not everything is clean here. xAI’s Grok models have faced public controversies including inappropriate image generation. All 11 original xAI co-founders departed last year. Musk has described xAI as needing a rebuild. Cursor’s product distribution and its existing base of professional developers form part of that reset.
a16z published a post hours after closing: “The fastest iterating team wins.” Critics have raised questions about one entity controlling large compute clusters, model development, and a primary developer interface simultaneously.
What Cursor Users See Today
So far, existing users report continuity. The product keeps working. New models appear in the dropdown. Usage limits have increased for many. Grok 4.6, released earlier this week, offers an early preview of the combined roadmap. Cursor’s statement kept the pitch grounded: “This means we can provide customers with more capable models at lower cost.”
