TikTok launches in-feed checkout and AI shopping agent

TikTok is pushing checkout closer to the scroll. At Advertising Week NYC on October 5, the platform announced two new commerce features: Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct. Both are now in eligibility-based testing in the US.

What Each Feature Does

Shopping Assistant is a conversational agent that handles product details, sizing, and availability questions inside the app, then hands the purchase off to TikTok’s in-app browser to complete.

Buy Direct goes further. It puts a one-click checkout directly inside the For You feed, using stored payment and address details. No redirect, no friction.

Both features run on Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol. The brand stays the merchant of record in both cases.

The Operator Angle

If you sell physical products or run DTC campaigns, this shortens the path from discovery to purchase significantly. The in-feed checkout in particular removes the biggest drop-off point in social commerce: the click away from the platform.

Testing is eligibility-based, so access is not open to everyone yet. Worth watching whether conversion data from early participants surfaces publicly before a wider rollout.
